Notes

Note 196081: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property or the value group embracing the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Choose containment that controls shedding: tight poly bags or banded bales with a moisture barrier liner; mark bales as clips, tags, or sweepings.
  2. Palletize for stackability—keep bales within pallet footprint, add corner boards, and stretch-wrap with a top sheet to protect from dust and light moisture.
  3. Document precisely: list fiber types (wool, alpaca, camel hair, mohair), note if mixed with other fibers, and state “waste, NOI—non-hazardous” on the BOL.
  4. Load away from liquids and odor sources; use floor liners and straps to prevent movement, especially with loose sweepings or light-density bags.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower rates are achievable when waste fibers are dense, stackable bales, helping reach the lower end of the 55–100 class range.
  • Accurate NMFC wording (clips/tags/sweepings, with or without other fibers) reduces reclass fees and surprise accessorials.
  • Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and allows more flexible LTL routing without hazmat surcharges.
  • Cleaner, tighter packs cut handling time and claim risk, improving recycling yield and buyer confidence for textile reclaimers.
