Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
196150.00 Lubricating Grease, asphalt base, containing not less than 85 percent asphalt, spent, in packages 55

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package spent grease in leakproof containers (e.g., lined steel pails or tight-head drums) and add absorbent pads under lids to catch oil bleed; palletize with trays and stretch wrap.
  2. Write the NMFC on the BOL exactly: “Lubricating Grease, asphalt base, spent, in packages — NMFC 196150 — Class 55,” and mark non-hazardous to avoid unnecessary hazmat handling.
  3. Keep units upright and away from heat sources; asphalt-rich grease can soften and weep at higher temps. Avoid double-stacking unless containers are drum-rated and visibly rigid.
  4. Confirm the material is at least 85% asphalt and that receivers accept Waste Materials Group freight; include an SDS or waste profile if requested by the carrier or consignee.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 pricing simplifies quotes and helps prevent reclass fees tied to density or dimensional audits.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands the pool of LTL carriers willing to move the freight.
  • Clear Waste Materials Group identification streamlines approvals for used product returns, recycling, or disposal routes.
  • Leakproof, palletized packaging reduces cleanup charges and damage claims, protecting margins on low-value waste shipments.
