Notes
Note 196181: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the material is at least 40% water and not regulated for DOT hazard labels; when in doubt, test and document content and see Note, item 196181.
- Write a precise BOL: “Waste hydroxy aldehydes or sugars, residuum from pentaerythritol, in drums — NMFC 196180, Class 60, non-hazardous.”
- Prepare drums for LTL: tighten bungs, use leakproof liners, palletize 55-gallon steel or poly drums (e.g., 4 per pallet), then block, brace, and band securely.
- Limit heat exposure and ship promptly so water content does not drop; maintaining ≥40% water preserves the non-hazardous Class 60 status.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 60 rating stabilizes quotes and reduces reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges, placarding, and specialized carrier restrictions.
- Drummed waste streams load efficiently, improving turn time and lowering spill-related claims.
- Clear waste-group designation supports audit readiness for chemical plants and recyclers.
