How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the waste stream precisely: worn clothing and carpets in compressed bales, cordage/rope cuttings, or rag and wool dust in sealed, poly‑lined bags. Do not mix textile dust with liquids or metal shards.
  2. Package to contain fibers and fines. Use dense, strapped bales with moisture barriers for rags and cloth; double‑bag dusty waste (rag dust, shoddy) with liners and palletize to prevent leakage.
  3. Document the reclamation intent and any contamination. Mark as “Waste for Reclamation,” note prior exposure (e.g., oils, roofing residues), and provide an SDS if dust or residues may trigger hazmat handling.
  4. Verify exclusions and carrier rules. Worn mattresses, pillows, and quilts may fall under related items (see 196222). Obtain carrier preapproval for dusty loads and confirm any combustible‑dust restrictions.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right‑sized packing (tight bales, lined bags) boosts density and containment, helping secure better LTL rates and reducing reclass or cleanup fees.
  • Clear segregation of rags, cordage, and mill dust simplifies rating under NMFC 196200 and minimizes disputes, inspections, and delay charges.
  • Reclamation‑ready packaging speeds acceptance at recyclers, turning waste into recoverable value while lowering disposal costs and landfill surcharges.
  • Proactive hazmat awareness for dusty materials lowers safety risk, supports carrier compliance, and reduces the likelihood of accessorials for spills.
