NMFC 196180 – Waste Hydroxy Aldehyde Residuum | Class 60

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

1. Confirm the material is at least 40% water and not regulated for DOT hazard labels; when in doubt, test and document content and see Note, item 196181.
2. Write a precise BOL: “Waste hydroxy aldehydes or sugars, residuum from pentaerythritol, in drums — NMFC 196180, Class 60, non-hazardous.”
3. Prepare drums for LTL: tighten bungs, use leakproof liners, palletize 55-gallon steel or poly drums (e.g., 4 per pallet), then block, brace, and band securely.
4. Limit heat exposure and ship promptly so water content does not drop; maintaining ≥40% water preserves the non-hazardous Class 60 status.
