Notes
Note 196222: NOTE-Shipments weighing 30,000 pounds or more may be loose.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write precise BOL text using NMFC terms: e.g., “Waste cotton motes, baled, not manufactured wiping waste.” If mixed, state “mixed jute and cotton waste, baled.”
- Choose tight bales or heavy-duty bags. List bale weight and tie count on documents (example: 10 bales x 900 lb, 6 steel ties each) and palletize for forklift access.
- Control moisture and contamination. Line gaylords, use woven poly bags, cap stacks, and tarp if weather-exposed to prevent mold, odors, and added weight.
- For cord tire fabric residue from rubber reclamation, double-bag to contain fines and note any rubber content. Exclude metal beads/wires to avoid damage and claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Compression improves density and cuts LTL rates; moving from loose sacks to 900 lb bales can materially lower per-cwt charges.
- Accurate NMFC wording (motes, noils, rovings, spinners’ waste) minimizes reclass/reweigh disputes and speeds carrier acceptance.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and shortens tender-to-pickup timelines for textile recyclers and reclaimers.
- Clean, dry packaging reduces claims and preserves resale value for mills, turning disposal costs into recovered material revenue.
