How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack crystals in partitioned boxes or foam cell trays; add tissue or film between faces to prevent scratching and use a rigid outer carton.
- For LTL moves, consolidate small boxes into a master carton and secure to a pallet with straps and corner boards; avoid overhang and heavy top-stacking.
- State NMFC 196400, Watch/Clock Crystals, Class 125 on the BOL; no density needed. Note piece count and material (sapphire, mineral, acrylic) and include declared value if insured.
- Mark Fragile and request top-load preference when possible. Photograph packaging before tender; e.g., a jeweler sending 500 assorted crystals to a repair center.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 125 simplifies quoting and budgeting with no density calculations.
- Lower reclass risk by matching the boxed-packaging description, reducing inspection disputes and surprise fees.
- Fewer damage claims: partitioned packaging protects brittle glass and sapphire, cutting replacements and delays.
- Operational efficiency for jewelers, watch OEMs, and service hubs—standard cartons palletize cleanly and speed dock turns.
