How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the commodity is the counterweight for a sump pump switch and package only the weights in sturdy boxes, separate from any electrical components.
- Bag or sleeve individual weights to prevent metal-on-metal abrasion, add a small desiccant if moisture is a concern, and keep the heaviest pieces low in the carton.
- Palletize cartons in an interlocking pattern, use a top cap and two bands, mark Heavy on each box, and list NMFC 197000, Class 70 on the BOL.
- Example: For a 25 lb shipment of tether weights, use a 200# test carton with an H-tape seal and keep each box under 50 lb for safe manual handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 gives predictable pricing and reduces reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous status speeds pickup and avoids hazmat paperwork and fees.
- Boxed packaging is carrier-friendly, simplifying consolidation with other pump parts.
- Clear NMFC mapping (197000) streamlines quoting across carriers for better rate shopping.
