How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure each carton’s weight and outside cubic feet to determine density, then map to the correct class within 50–400 for NMFC 196955.
- Coil flexible rubber or foam strips loosely and bag them before boxing; add chipboard or kraft interleaves so adhesives don’t stick and coils don’t kink.
- For rigid or semi-rigid metal thresholds, cap ends, use corner guards, and suspend with foam rails inside the box to prevent bend damage in LTL handling.
- Palletize boxed weatherstrips with no overhang, full top and bottom sheets, and tight wrap; label cartons with NMFC 196955, density, and piece count to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-accurate packing can land a lower class within the 50–400 range, cutting LTL spend without changing carriers.
- Non-hazardous commodity streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or documentation delays.
- Item 170–compliant boxes reduce concealed-damage claims and reclassification fees, improving predictability of freight bills.
- Uniform carton sizes for weatherstrips maximize trailer cube, enabling more units per skid and better linehaul economics.
