Note 198081: NOTE-Applies only on clamps to be assembled with other parts to form devices such as are used to temporarily hold or mount electric lamps.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the item to its allowed pack: bed spring fabric and links in boxes, gabions flat‑packed in packages, braid/tape on reels or in boxes, clamps with plastic or rubber grips in boxes (per note item 189081).
- Calculate density before quoting: measure L x W x H in inches, convert to cubic feet, then weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 40×48×24 at 300 lb ≈ 11.2 pcf; lower density yields a higher class within 50‑400.
- Control sharp edges and recoil: cap wire ends, add edge guards, shrink‑wrap and band. For reels, chock flanges and strap to pallet; label “Sharp Edges” and “This Side Up.”
- Build stowable pallets: keep to 40×48 with no overhang, use crates or drums for loose wirework NOI to prevent puncture, and ship mixed SKUs separately if densities differ to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density to lower freight class: flat‑pack gabions and nest metal cloth rolls to boost pcf and reduce LTL linehaul costs.
- Accurate NMFC use for spring‑steel clamps and specialty wire items cuts inspection delays, rebills, and costly reclassifications.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds quoting, ideal for construction supply, industrial MRO, and project shipments.
- Damage prevention via edge protection, blocked reels, and capped bundles reduces OS&D claims and preserves galvanized/PVC‑coated finishes.
