How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Fur stretchers, KD or in panels, in packages” and apply Class 70; no density calculation is required.
- Bundle panelized parts tightly with interleaving sheets, corner protectors, and two-way strapping, then fully wrap so the bundle counts as a single package.
- Add a moisture barrier (poly liner or shrink wrap) to protect kiln-dried wood from humidity changes during transit and storage.
- Measure the longest stretcher or panel to avoid oversize fees; cap and pad the tapered ends to prevent punctures or tip damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces costly reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous woodenware is widely accepted by carriers, speeding tendering and lowering compliance friction.
- Panelized, packaged shipments stack better, reducing damage risk and improving cube efficiency on pallets or conveyors.
- Clear packaging as “packages” aligns with the NMFC item, helping avoid accessorials for loose or nonconforming freight.
