How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each trunk box in rigid corrugated cartons with corner protectors and foam or paper to prevent scuffing on the unfinished wood surfaces.
- Palletize on 4-way entry pallets; use slip sheets, strap crosswise, and stretch wrap with a top cap to keep lids from flexing during stacking.
- List the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Trunk Boxes, in the white, woodenware, boxed,” and include piece count, packaging type, and accurate dims and weight for rating.
- Shield against moisture: add kraft wrap or a poly liner for long hauls or humid routes, and request ISPM 15 heat-treated pallets for export moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Precise woodenware labeling reduces reclass risk and avoids surprise carrier fees.
- Cartonized and banded pallets increase stackability, cutting damage claims and reship costs.
- Master cartons improve cube efficiency, helping lower cost per unit on LTL lanes.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and speeds up transit planning.
