How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 200080 and Class 50 on the BOL to avoid reclass; note “Woodpulp – Not Powdered, in packages.”
- Unitize bales on 40x48 pallets with edge protectors, two or more straps, full stretch-wrap, and a moisture barrier sheet on top.
- Keep freight dry and stable: load above floor level, block and brace against movement, and avoid stacking if bales deform under weight.
- Document counts clearly (bales per pallet, total pallets) and photograph packaging before pickup; keep away from odor-heavy freight like chemicals.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low fixed Class 50 helps reduce LTL rates versus higher classes, improving per-load cost on mill-to-converter lanes.
- No density calculation needed, speeding up quoting and cutting down on inspection-related delays or reweigh charges.
- Proper packaged presentation lowers claim risk from moisture or crush damage, stabilizing service performance and budgets.
- Clear NMFC usage minimizes reclassification fees and billing disputes, protecting margins on recurring pulp shipments.
