How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book and label as NMFC 200160, Class 100; note “steel wool (NOI) in boxes” on the BOL to avoid reclass delays.
- Pack pads or rolls in corrugated cartons with a poly liner to contain fibers; choose double-wall boxes for heavier packs.
- If product arrives bagged, overbox into corrugated cartons before LTL tender to align with the boxed packaging requirement.
- Palletize cartons tight to a 48x40 pallet, add corner boards and stretch wrap, and avoid excessive top-load to minimize compression.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 100 rating removes density calculations and stabilizes LTL quotes.
- Lower claim risk: boxed packaging prevents snags and fiber shedding, improving handling on docks and conveyors.
- Broader carrier choice: non-hazardous commodity ships without hazmat fees or special endorsements.
- Better cube efficiency: consolidating small cartons on standard pallets reduces touches and per-unit freight spend.
