How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe on the BOL as: Balloons, plastic or rubber, not inflated, other than toy (NMFC 21300), and note packaging as boxes or cartons.
- Bundle balloon packs in inner poly bags, then place in crush-rated master cartons (32 ECT or better) with void fill to prevent chafing and edge damage.
- Palletize light cartons with corner boards and a rigid top sheet; cap height near 48 inches to reduce top-load crushing from heavier freight.
- Protect latex from heat and UV and avoid temperature extremes; request dry van service and keep cartons off warehouse floors to limit moisture.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 means predictable LTL pricing without density calculations, reducing re-bills and quote variance.
- Non-hazardous commodity avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized documentation, streamlining tender-to-delivery timelines.
- Compact, uninflated product enables high unit counts per pallet, lowering per-piece freight cost and improving margin on bulk orders.
- Accurate non-toy designation minimizes carrier reclassification risk, cutting dispute time and potential inspection or correction fees.
