How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm fit: non-inflated, non-toy balloons (e.g., promo, scientific, meteorological) with or without parachutes qualify under NMFC 21320; review Note item 21321 for definitions.
- Package to prevent creasing and puncture: coil membranes loosely, polybag sets, and place parachutes or lines in separate inner bags. Use crush-resistant cartons and add “Do Not Crush” labels.
- Control environment: keep latex away from heat, UV, and moisture; add desiccant packs. For film/foil balloons, roll on a core or use sleeves to avoid kinks.
- Bill of Lading tips: list “NMFC 21320, Balloons, not inflated, other than toy, in packages, Class 150.” Do not apply density-based class. Separate any non-qualifying items (e.g., gas cylinders, inflators) under their own NMFC.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 150 removes density math and reduces reclass disputes and surprise adjustments.
- Simplified paperwork: non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges or extra training.
- Cleaner billing: one item covers with-or-without parachutes, reducing multiple line items and speeding rating and audits.
- Lower claim risk: proper crush and moisture protection preserves delicate membranes, cutting replacement costs and delays.
