How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Label cartons or wrapped bundles with NMFC 22020 and Class 85. Include piece count and bundle length so terminal staff can verify without opening packaging.
- Use corrugated boxes for mixed freight and add end caps or corner protectors to keep the plastic sheathing from scuffing. For bundles, strap to a pallet and add a non-slip layer.
- Avoid over-tensioning steel or poly straps; snug is enough to prevent rod denting or plastic cutting. Add a full shrink wrap to keep loose bars from migrating.
- Check carrier overlength rules if shipping long sticks (e.g., 96 in+). When possible, box 6–8 ft sections or split bundles to reduce accessorials and improve handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations and lowers reclass risk.
- Packaging flexibility: accepts boxes, bags, or wrapped bundles, reducing material costs and prep time.
- Fewer claims: protective boxing and stable bundling prevent scuffs to plastic and edge damage to wood.
- Broader carrier options: non-hazardous status and standard class improve LTL availability and transit reliability.
