How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the applicable weight tier under NMFC 22067 (two weight-based classes). Weigh each boxed base after packing to ensure the correct class on the BOL.
- Use sturdy boxes for single bases with edge protection around plates and collars. Add foam or corrugated pads to shield set screws and threaded inserts from puncturing the carton.
- For dense materials like cast iron or concrete, reinforce bottoms with double-wall and internal pads. Example: a 55 lb cast-iron base boxed with foam corners and a heavy-duty insert to prevent drop-through.
- Reference the Note under item 22068 to confirm coverage for holders or decorative resin shells. Mark cartons “Heavy” and indicate center of gravity to reduce handling damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Weight-based classification can unlock lower classes at higher piece weights, lowering LTL rates when safely packed within carrier limits.
- Accurate per-piece weights and compliant boxing reduce reweighs, reclasses, and surprise invoice adjustments.
- Protective packaging for dense bases cuts claim risk and keeps retail and hospitality replenishment on schedule.
- Clear labeling and accessorial planning (liftgate, limited access, residential) avoid avoidable fees and delivery delays.
