How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package each base in a sturdy carton or crate and bag the cork/rubber inserts to keep oils and moisture off the materials.
- Use edge protectors and blocking on steel channel flanges; cap open channel ends with MDF or foam to prevent punctures.
- Print the BOL as: “NMFC 22070 — Machine Vibration-Absorbing Bases, Class 77.5, In Packages” and list piece count separately from any hardware.
- If shipping with a machine, keep the bases as their own packaged items rather than bolted to the frame so they retain this classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 means predictable LTL quotes and fewer reclass charges—no density calculation needed.
- Non-hazardous materials streamline carrier acceptance and reduce compliance steps and accessorial surprises.
- Clear “in packages” requirement minimizes claim risk by aligning packaging with NMFC language.
- Mid-tier class often yields balanced freight rates for heavy steel components without premium handling fees.
