How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the applicable weight tier under NMFC 22067 (two weight-based classes). Weigh each boxed base after packing to ensure the correct class on the BOL.
  2. Use sturdy boxes for single bases with edge protection around plates and collars. Add foam or corrugated pads to shield set screws and threaded inserts from puncturing the carton.
  3. For dense materials like cast iron or concrete, reinforce bottoms with double-wall and internal pads. Example: a 55 lb cast-iron base boxed with foam corners and a heavy-duty insert to prevent drop-through.
  4. Reference the Note under item 22068 to confirm coverage for holders or decorative resin shells. Mark cartons “Heavy” and indicate center of gravity to reduce handling damage.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Weight-based classification can unlock lower classes at higher piece weights, lowering LTL rates when safely packed within carrier limits.
  • Accurate per-piece weights and compliant boxing reduce reweighs, reclasses, and surprise invoice adjustments.
  • Protective packaging for dense bases cuts claim risk and keeps retail and hospitality replenishment on schedule.
  • Clear labeling and accessorial planning (liftgate, limited access, residential) avoid avoidable fees and delivery delays.
