Note 22261: NOTE-Applies on baskets with or without utensils, dishes or other accessories.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure and weigh each handling unit, then calculate density: (L×W×H in inches) ÷ 1728 = cubic feet; weight ÷ cubic feet = pcf. Example: 24×24×20 in at 40 lb ≈ 5.6 pcf.
  2. Pack in strong boxes or rigid crates per Item 170. Nest baskets and hampers to reduce void space, and use foam, paper, or airbags to prevent crushing.
  3. Protect delicate materials like wicker, rattan, or bamboo by polybagging to stop snags, and add edge/corner protectors for wire or metal frames.
  4. Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 22260 Baskets or Hampers, boxed/crated, density X pcf.” For lunch or picnic baskets, review Note 22261 before tendering.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize density with nesting and tight packouts to reach lower freight classes and reduce LTL spend.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies compliance, speeding up pickups and transit.
  • Crated or double‑wall boxed packaging cuts damage risk on fragile woven goods, lowering claims and chargebacks.
  • Accurate density documentation minimizes reclass/reweigh fees and improves quote accuracy for repeat shipments.
