How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package burnt-out copper, steel, or zinc battery parts in sturdy boxes or crates on pallets; band tightly and add edge guards to control sharp metal edges.
- Keep pieces dry and free of electrolyte residue; note “burnt-out battery cylinders/frames/plates” on paperwork to distinguish from live cells or hazmat.
- Separate by metal type when possible (copper vs steel vs zinc) to meet recycler specs and prevent contamination charges at delivery.
- Use a 48x40 pallet with cross-banding and stretch wrap; cap the top with corrugated sheets so nothing protrudes beyond the pallet footprint.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 rating simplifies quotes and typically lowers LTL costs versus higher-class miscellaneous scrap items.
- Non-hazardous designation reduces accessorial risk and avoids hazmat fees, speeding tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Simple, package-based classification minimizes reclass or inspection disputes and keeps claims exposure low.
- Clear labeling of burnt-out metal components supports recycler acceptance and predictable downstream processing costs.
