Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
22760.00 Battery Cylinders, Frames or Plates, copper, steel or zinc, burnt out, in packages 60

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package burnt-out copper, steel, or zinc battery parts in sturdy boxes or crates on pallets; band tightly and add edge guards to control sharp metal edges.
  2. Keep pieces dry and free of electrolyte residue; note “burnt-out battery cylinders/frames/plates” on paperwork to distinguish from live cells or hazmat.
  3. Separate by metal type when possible (copper vs steel vs zinc) to meet recycler specs and prevent contamination charges at delivery.
  4. Use a 48x40 pallet with cross-banding and stretch wrap; cap the top with corrugated sheets so nothing protrudes beyond the pallet footprint.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 rating simplifies quotes and typically lowers LTL costs versus higher-class miscellaneous scrap items.
  • Non-hazardous designation reduces accessorial risk and avoids hazmat fees, speeding tender-to-pickup timelines.
  • Simple, package-based classification minimizes reclass or inspection disputes and keeps claims exposure low.
  • Clear labeling of burnt-out metal components supports recycler acceptance and predictable downstream processing costs.
