How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 22780 and Class 100 on the BOL, e.g., “Battery Fillers, rubber, w/ or w/o hydrometer, boxed” to prevent reclass issues.
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or foam; cap any hydrometer stems and keep rubber bulbs from being crushed or kinked.
- Palletize multi-carton orders with edge guards and tight wrap, keeping cartons flush to the pallet to reduce cross-dock damage.
- If shipping electrolyte or batteries too, list them on separate NMFC lines and apply hazmat rules to the acid—never combine descriptions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable pricing and faster rate shopping without density calculations.
- Non-hazardous item avoids hazmat surcharges and training overhead, boosting margins for service parts shipments.
- Box-only packaging standardizes fulfillment, cutting pack time and reducing material variety for distributors and eCommerce.
- Accurate NMFC labeling reduces reclass/reweigh charges and lowers claim risk on any fragile hydrometer components.
