How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack whole, ground, or powdered carob in clean, food-safe corrugated boxes with poly liners; fill voids to prevent sifting and seal seams with reinforced tape.
- Palletize 40–50 lb cartons in interlocked rows, add a moisture barrier top sheet, then stretch wrap with 50% overlap and corner boards to protect edges.
- Clearly mark cartons and the BOL: “Carob/Locust Beans – NMFC 23040 – Class 70 – Non-Hazardous.” No density calc needed, but include total weight and pallet dimensions for rating.
- Request dry, odor-free trailers to avoid flavor transfer; schedule away from chemical pickups and keep loads off damp warehouse floors to protect product quality.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes, lowering surprise carrier fees.
- Single item covers whole, ground, and powdered forms, enabling standardized freight profiles across facilities.
- Box-focused packing practices minimize leakage and OS&D claims, protecting margins and carrier relationships.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and accelerates tender approvals, improving service flexibility.
