How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm packaging meets Package 115 and Note item 23810; use liners and tight closures to contain fine pigment dust.
- For bags, palletize 40–50 lb multiwall sacks with a pallet cap and stretch wrap; for boxes or fiber drums, use dust‑tight lids and steel or poly bands.
- Mark paperwork and labels with NMFC 23980, “Blacks, dry, NOI,” Class 85; avoid co-loading with foodstuffs or white textiles to prevent staining claims.
- Book as non-hazmat LTL, provide accurate piece count and weight, and select stackable pallets to optimize cube without changing the fixed class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 85 minimizes reclassifications and rebills from density disputes.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and simplifies documentation and carrier acceptance.
- Leak- and dust-tight packing cuts cleanup costs, OS&D claims, and detention linked to spills.
- Flexible packaging (bags, boxes, drums) supports consolidation across vendors and steadier freight rates.
