How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 24180, Class 70 on the BOL and note packaging as crated or surfaces protected by wooden cleats.
- Strap around the cleats or crate stringers—never directly on rubber, leatherboard, or pulpboard faces—to avoid compression marks.
- For leatherboard/pulpboard, add a moisture barrier wrap and corner protection inside the crate to prevent edge swell and scuffing.
- Set cleat spacing to match forklift tines, keep load flush to the pallet or skid, and mark Do Not Stack if shipping cleated-only units.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass surprises.
- Crate or cleat protection lowers abrasion and gouge claims, cutting damage costs and downtime.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees or paperwork.
- Standardized packaging improves cube planning for die shops, converters, and gasket makers, supporting sharper LTL rates.
