How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference “NMFC 24240, Class 200 – Human Blood, Liquid, frozen or chilled, in refrigerated containers” on your BOL, and request reefer LTL or temperature-controlled service.
- Use leakproof primary containers with absorbent material, a sealed secondary, and a rigid, insulated outer container or powered refrigerated shipper to maintain the required temperature.
- Pre-chill packaging and refrigerants, and specify the exact temperature range (e.g., chilled 2–8°C or frozen per protocol) in the pickup notes to avoid cross-dock delays.
- Label per medical transport rules (e.g., Exempt Human Specimen where applicable), add a temperature monitor if needed, and avoid weekend handoffs for time/temperature-sensitive moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 200 simplifies quoting and helps prevent reclass disputes or surprise adjustments.
- Lower spoilage risk: proper refrigerated containers reduce temperature excursions, claims, and replacement costs for labs and hospitals.
- Faster tendering: clear NMFC 24240 designation streamlines carrier selection for temperature-controlled LTL and minimizes exceptions.
- Compliance-first shipping: aligning with item notes and medical transport guidelines reduces delays, inspections, and redeliveries.
