How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density from the packaged unit: measure length × width × height (in inches) to get cubic feet, weigh the shipment, then divide weight by cubic feet to find pcf for class selection.
  2. Package per Item 170: bundle boards or panels tightly, band to a sturdy pallet, and add rigid top/bottom sheets and corner guards to resist edge crush and puncture.
  3. Describe clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 24400, expanded honeycomb boards/panels, density __ pcf, in packages.” Include pallet dimensions and piece count to avoid reclass delays.
  4. Protect geometry-sensitive product: support long spans to prevent sag, use do-not-stack cones for low-density packs, and orient cells to maximize compressive strength during transit.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating unlocks savings: improving pack-out to raise pcf can move freight to a lower class and reduce LTL costs.
  • Accurate paperwork and Item 170-compliant packaging minimize inspections, reclass charges, and unexpected accessorial fees.
  • Non-hazardous commodity streamlines routing and carrier acceptance, enabling faster quotes and simpler tendering.
  • Damage reduction on fragile honeycomb edges lowers claim rates and keeps customer fill rates and OTIF performance high.
