How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Choose double- or triple-wall corrugated boxes with internal blocking so flukes and shanks can’t pierce the carton; add edge guards and a plywood base pad for 30–100 lb anchors.
  2. Wrap metal surfaces with VCI paper or stretch film to prevent corrosion and abrasion, and cap sharp tips with molded protectors or dense foam.
  3. If a boxed anchor exceeds 70 lb, place it on a pallet, band in two directions, and label Heavy; mark center of gravity when the shank makes the load unbalanced.
  4. On the BOL, write “Anchors, in boxes — NMFC 24510,” include metal type (steel or iron), unit count, exact weight, and carton dimensions for accurate LTL rating.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Clear NMFC reference for boxed anchors reduces reclass risk and surprise accessorials during inspection.
  • Non-hazardous classification streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat fees or special paperwork.
  • Standardized boxed packaging moves smoothly across cross-docks and conveyors, cutting handling time and damage claims.
  • Right-sized boxes and palletized handling minimize cubic penalties and help secure better LTL freight rates on recurring marine shipments.
