How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose double- or triple-wall corrugated boxes with internal blocking so flukes and shanks can’t pierce the carton; add edge guards and a plywood base pad for 30–100 lb anchors.
- Wrap metal surfaces with VCI paper or stretch film to prevent corrosion and abrasion, and cap sharp tips with molded protectors or dense foam.
- If a boxed anchor exceeds 70 lb, place it on a pallet, band in two directions, and label Heavy; mark center of gravity when the shank makes the load unbalanced.
- On the BOL, write “Anchors, in boxes — NMFC 24510,” include metal type (steel or iron), unit count, exact weight, and carton dimensions for accurate LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC reference for boxed anchors reduces reclass risk and surprise accessorials during inspection.
- Non-hazardous classification streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat fees or special paperwork.
- Standardized boxed packaging moves smoothly across cross-docks and conveyors, cutting handling time and damage claims.
- Right-sized boxes and palletized handling minimize cubic penalties and help secure better LTL freight rates on recurring marine shipments.
