How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 24580 and Class 50 on the BOL, and describe the pieces as “steel mooring bits/chocks” with piece count and total weight to avoid reclass.
  2. Secure heavy bits to a solid pallet with steel or polyester banding and edge protectors; block and brace horns or cleats so they can’t roll or punch through.
  3. For smaller chocks, use a crate with interior dunnage; add VCI wrap and stretch film to limit corrosion during coastal transits and humid warehouses.
  4. Flag lift points or center of gravity on larger bollards, and request liftgate or dock-height service for marinas and shipyards that have limited access.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 provides predictable LTL pricing, improving quote accuracy and budget control for marine projects.
  • Simple, non-density classification lowers the risk of carrier reweigh/reclass fees when items are clearly described and packaged.
  • Proper blocking and corrosion protection reduces OS&D claims and replacement costs on high-strength steel hardware.
  • Clear handling instructions speed deliveries to ports, yards, and marinas, minimizing detention and keeping job timelines on track.
