Notes
Note 24656: NOTE-Also applies on boats or rafts regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 9, Life-saving Appliance, conforming with the requirements specified in 49 CFR 173.219.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document total weight and select packaging that meets Items 176, 2115, or 2232. Use boxes or crates with blocking to protect rigid hull or deck sections.
- Remove or declare hazardous components like CO2 cylinders, batteries, or flares. If included, provide shipper’s declaration and follow carrier hazmat procedures.
- Calculate density from the packed piece’s weight and cubic feet to determine class. Note external dimensions and mark them on the BOL to support density-based rating.
- Describe the commodity clearly: “Inflatable boat—deflated” and specify type (RIB, kayak, catamaran, pedal boat). Check notes if shipping lifeboats or rescue boats which may use other items.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Higher-density packing can reduce class and lower LTL rates for bulky but lightweight boats.
- Using compliant boxes or crates minimizes puncture risk and claims, protecting margins during peak boating season.
- Accurate hazardous declarations prevent reclass fees, storage charges, and delays at terminals.
- Clear, NMFC-aligned descriptions speed up quoting, prevent inspections, and streamline carrier capacity planning.
