Notes
Note 24671: NOTE-Applies on products such as Bodyboards, Kickboards, Kneeboards, Paddleboards, Sailboards, with or without sails, or Surfboards, exceeding 96 inches in greatest dimension. For provisions applicable to articles not exceeding 96 inches in greatest dimension, see item 15520.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the exact piece type listed under 24670—canoe, kayak, hull, cabin/deck house module, pontoon section, catamaran or sailboat—and note that water sports boards move under item 24671.
- Capture true footprint: overall length, beam, and height (include trailer or cradles). Flag overlength/overwidth so carriers plan the right equipment; liftgates rarely apply to hulls or pontoons.
- Package for hull integrity: use cradles or A‑frames, foam/bunk padding, and wide straps around structural points. Remove masts, rudders, props, and loose hardware; crate cabins/deck houses with window protection and labeled lifting points.
- Match mode to size: rack and nest kayaks/canoes for LTL; crate construction kits on skids; move large hulls or pontoon assemblies as partial TL or open-deck with spreader-bar lifts and scheduled appointments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate use of NMFC 24670 reduces reclass/reweigh disputes and minimizes damage claims by aligning packaging and handling with boat-specific requirements.
- Shipping as sections or construction kits enables standard LTL dimensions and avoids many special handling surcharges that full, assembled boats can trigger.
- Racking and nesting small craft (kayaks/canoes) increases cube efficiency, lowering per-unit freight rates and helping meet carrier dimension thresholds.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines documentation and speeds quoting, while clear notes on cabins/deck houses help carriers assign the right gear and avoid detention.
