How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle components: band hull panels, mast and crossbeams, and bag all hardware; shield steel runners with edge guards and corrugated wrap to prevent punctures.
- Choose robust packaging: double-wall cartons for small parts or a light crate for spars; place all bundles on one pallet for unified handling and an accurate piece count.
- Label every piece “KD Ice Boat” and list the package count on the BOL; declare NMFC 24890, Class 100 so carriers rate it correctly without density data.
- Request a dry van pickup and block-and-strap the pallet lengthwise; use corner posts and Do Not Stack cones if long spars could flex or bow in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 yields predictable LTL quotes and reduces reclassification disputes.
- KD format cuts cubic footprint versus assembled boats, often enabling LTL instead of pricey dedicated truckload.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat paperwork and fees, streamlining booking and handling.
- Consolidated, protected packages lower damage risk to runners and spars, reducing claims and keeping winter-season deliveries on schedule.
