How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density to pick the correct class: measure the carton (L×W×H in inches) and weight. Example: 72×10×8 in = 3.33 cu ft; 28 lb ÷ 3.33 = 8.4 PCF.
- Protect blades and handles: cap blade tips, wrap shafts, and use double‑wall boxes or corrugated sleeves. Add void fill so paddles can’t slide inside the carton.
- Manage length: keep packages under 96 in when possible to avoid long‑freight surcharges. If overlength, use rigid tubes or reinforcements and mark “Long Freight—Do Not Stack.”
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 25085 – Oars/Paddles, boxed,” include piece count, dims, weight, and calculated PCF. Follow NMFC Item 170 packaging rules.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density ratings minimize reclass/reweigh fees and keep LTL quotes aligned with final invoices.
- Proper boxing and edge protection reduce blade scuffs and shaft cracks, lowering claim risk and turnaround time.
- Non‑hazmat status broadens carrier options and enables fast consolidation with other sporting goods shipments.
- Space‑efficient packing (pairing paddles, master cartons) improves trailer cube and can reduce rate per unit for outfitters, marinas, and rental fleets.
