How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Apply Class 85 to marine rigging items (lines, blocks, shackles, turnbuckles) when they are fully enclosed in packages—avoid tendering loose coils.
- Prevent tangles and abrasion: cap and tape rope ends, coil lines tightly, polybag hardware, then cushion in double‑wall cartons with void fill.
- Keep kits together by vessel or job—combine mast lines, stays, and fittings in one carton and mark “Rigging Components” for quicker receiving.
- Use compact cartons or small crates sized to hardware; strap bundles and affix a scannable packing list on the exterior for dock speed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and unexpected charges.
- Consolidating small rigging pieces into fewer packages lowers handling touchpoints and improves LTL minimum charge utilization.
- Non‑hazmat status expands carrier choices and stabilizes schedules during peak refit and launch seasons.
- Protective packing cuts claims on scuffed hardware and kinked lines, preserving margins and customer satisfaction.
