How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm you’re shipping rudders as packaged units (loose blades or assemblies). Note material—stainless, aluminum, composite, or wood—and whether stocks, pintles, or tillers are attached.
- Package to protect edges and the stock: foam wrap and edge guards, V-blocks for the shaft, and a rigid carton or crate on a pallet. Mark Do Not Clamp and No Stack to prevent clamp damage and top load crush.
- Keep the blade within the pallet footprint and block both leading and trailing edges to stop flex. Use corrosion inhibitor (VCI) for metal parts and moisture barrier for wood cores.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 25220, Class 77.5, “Rudders, in packages.” Include piece count, dimensions, and photos. Example: 65" fiberglass rudder with 316 stock, crated on 48"×72" pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 simplifies quoting across carriers, reducing reclass fees and surprise rebills for boatyards, OEMs, and marine dealers.
- Clear packaging expectations (packages only) lower handling risks, improve claims outcomes, and protect margin during peak refit seasons.
- Standardized NMFC language accelerates BOL prep and procurement workflows, enabling faster LTL tendering and dock throughput.
- Non-hazardous status avoids additional compliance steps, helping keep transit times predictable and freight rates competitive.
