How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each sail dry in a sail bag, roll along the luff to avoid sharp creases, then carton or heavy poly-wrap the roll; remove battens and loose hardware.
- Add edge guards and two-way strapping; if the bundle is soft, label “Do Not Stack/Do Not Fork.” Palletize multiple packages with a rigid top-board to prevent compression.
- State on the BOL: “Sails, other than worn out, in packages — NMFC 25240, Class 100, non-hazardous,” plus package count and declared value for liability clarity.
- For sail lofts and marinas, schedule pickup away from wet areas; use moisture barriers and desiccant packs for humid routes or extended transit times.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 avoids density disputes, helping sailmakers and charter fleets budget with confidence.
- No hazmat burden: non-hazardous commodity eliminates hazmat surcharges and special handling delays.
- Quicker quoting and tendering: a single, clear NMFC line reduces reclass risk and speeds carrier acceptance.
- Lower claim exposure: proper rolling, bagging, and protected bundling minimizes abrasion and crease damage in LTL networks.
