NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use double- or triple-wall boxes with rigid internal bracing for iron/steel fire boxes; add edge guards and foam blocking to prevent chafing and puncture.
  2. Print the class on paperwork and labels: 'NMFC 25620 • Class 65 • corrugated internal boiler fire boxes • boxed' and include piece count and weight per box.
  3. Protect against rust: wrap parts in VCI paper or oil-resistant film, bag loose hardware separately, and tape seams to keep moisture out during transit.
  4. Unitize multiple boxes on a pallet for LTL: keep heavy boxes low, band and stretch-wrap securely, and place orientation arrows to avoid tipovers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with fixed Class 65—no density math, fewer reclass fees, and smoother quoting.
  • Boxed presentation reduces special-handling charges versus loose metal and lowers damage claims.
  • Faster dock throughput: clear labeling and uniform boxes speed cross-dock handling and improve on-time delivery.
  • Material efficiency: strong corrugated boxes replace costly crating, controlling packaging spend and dimensional weight.
