How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose crating or NMFC Package 2522 packing; immobilize the aluminum heat exchanger with foam or wood blocks and keep manifolds and controls within the frame.
- Mark lifting points and center of gravity; apply Do Not Stack labels and tip/impact indicators to protect delicate exchanger tubes during LTL handling.
- Drain any test water, cap all ports, and secure flue parts and wiring so nothing protrudes beyond the crate footprint; avoid steel bands contacting the exchanger.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 25720, Class 85, and the packaging type (Crated or PKG 2522). Example: “NMFC 25720 – Class 85 – Package 2522.” Request liftgate or residential service if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density math, delivering predictable LTL quotes for varying boiler sizes.
- Proper crates or Package 2522 help prevent reclass/rebill charges and minimize unexpected accessorial fees.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier availability and speeds tender-to-pickup, improving schedule reliability.
- Rigid protection around the aluminum exchanger lowers damage claims and warranty costs, keeping projects on track.
