Notes

Note 25971: NOTE-Also applies on named articles containing metals other than iron or steel, provided the weight of such metals does not exceed 20 percent of the total weight.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use approved packaging only: wood crate or triplewall fiberboard container securely fastened to lift truck skids/pallets per Item 170. Band or bolt through runners and mark center of gravity.
  2. Confirm each unit exceeds 500 lb and compute density with palletized dimensions. Example: 52 × 36 × 48 in at 560 lb = 52.0 cu ft; density ≈ 10.8 pcf (560 ÷ 52). Class is assigned by density under the note to Item 25971.
  3. Prepare equipment: drain oil from fryers, secure griddle plates, remove racks/baskets and bag inside the crate, cap gas/electric connections, and add shock/tilt indicators for visibility.
  4. Book the right handling: request forklift access at both ends, note limited access or appointments, and avoid pallet overhang to prevent damage and accessorial fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density calculation under NMFC 25970 prevents reweigh/reclass charges and stabilizes LTL rates.
  • Compliant crating or triplewall-on-skids speeds cross-dock handling, reducing touchpoints and damage claims on high-mass appliances.
  • Optimized footprint (tight crate to equipment, no overhang) can improve pcf, potentially lowering the density-based freight class and total cost.
  • Clear documentation—weight over 500 lb, packaging type, and density—accelerates quoting and tendering, improving capacity options for time-sensitive installs.
