How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect all flanged and threaded ports with caps, and wrap finned or coiled surfaces to prevent bent tubes during LTL handling.
- Crate or skid the economizer upright with clear center‑of‑gravity markings; block and brace inside the crate to stop coil movement.
- Use corner boards and steel or heavy poly banding; add “Do Not Stack” cones and shock/tilt indicators for delicate heat‑exchange bundles.
- On the BOL, describe materials and construction (e.g., steel boiler economizer, assembled) and note non-hazardous status to avoid hazmat miscodes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC alignment for fuel economizers reduces reclasses and surprise re-bills, stabilizing your LTL freight rates.
- Proper crating and bracing cut coil and tube damage, lowering claims and downtime on boiler retrofits or service projects.
- Non-hazardous designation helps avoid hazmat fees and simplifies carrier selection, speeding quotes and tendering.
- Accurate item descriptions and upright handling instructions improve carrier compliance, leading to faster, cleaner deliveries.
