Note 26291: NOTE-Also applies on Firebrick Shapes, Cement, Mortar or Asbestos Insulation Material to equip furnaces.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 26290 on the BOL with the description “Furnaces, metal heat treating or melting, NOI.” If shipping components only, note “parts, NOI” and reference the Note to item 26291 when applicable.
- Bolt the furnace base to a heavy skid with 4-way forklift entry, add steel banding, and crate controls or panels. Cushion refractory linings and heating elements; include Tip-N-Tell and shock indicators.
- Mark center of gravity, total weight, and lift points on all sides. Provide precise dimensions and request carrier appointment or rigging support for docks without overhead handling.
- For parts-only moves (burners, thermocouples, elements), use wood crates or double-wall cartons with foam-in-place, coil leads, and isolate fragile ceramics to prevent vibration damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correctly using NMFC 26290 reduces reclass fees and billing disputes, keeping LTL quotes predictable for heavy thermal equipment.
- Robust blocking, bracing, and COG labeling lowers damage risk on tall or top-heavy furnaces, cutting claim costs and downtime.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection, improving overall transit options and speed.
- Skidded, forklift-friendly packaging shortens handling time at terminals, reducing accessorials tied to special equipment or delays.
