Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
26480.00 Heaters, railway switch, oil burning:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Drain all fuel and residue, remove burners if detachable, and cap ports; note “empty, purged” on the BOL to prevent hazmat confusion.
  2. Bolt the heater’s base to a 48x40 pallet or custom skid with blocking and steel banding; add corner guards and a top frame to protect flue and controls.
  3. Bag small parts (caps, wicks, hardware), place in a labeled carton on the same skid, and shrink-wrap tightly to stop loss in transit.
  4. Mark up arrows and center of gravity; cover vents with taped caps and add an absorbent pad under the unit to catch any residual seepage.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NMFC mapping reduces reclass fees and dispute delays for seasonal rail maintenance shipments.
  • Non-hazardous status once drained simplifies carrier acceptance and minimizes hazmat surcharges.
  • Proper crating and bolting cut damage claims on heavy cast or steel housings, preserving depot uptime.
  • Grouping under boilers/furnaces flags carriers familiar with heating equipment, improving LTL rate leverage.
