How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact NMFC item under this heading: use 26511 or 26512 based on packaging and construction, and list that item on the BOL rather than 26510.
- Drain the tank fully, cap all inlets/outlets, protect the T&P valve, and brace the jacket with corner boards; strap upright to a 48x40 pallet with tilt/shock indicators.
- Measure overall height including pallet and top caps, and weigh the unit after packing; water heaters are tall and can exceed standard LTL height thresholds.
- Plan accessorials: request a liftgate for residential or job‑site pickups, note limited access or inside delivery needs, and label Keep Upright on all sides.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Selecting the correct subclass (26511/26512) prevents reclass fees and billing disputes, protecting margins on bulky residential or light‑commercial shipments.
- Upright, reinforced packing reduces liner and valve damage, lowering OS&D claims, replacements, and downtime for contractors awaiting installs.
- Clear NMFC notation and standardized palletizing speed carrier acceptance and inspections, improving pickup reliability and transit predictability.
- Consistent packaging footprints enable broader LTL rate shopping and minimize cubic minimum or oversize surcharges for tall appliances.
