Note 26721: NOTE-Articles weighing each greater than 110 pounds must be tendered in authorized packages secured on a lift truck skid, pallet or platform.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density: measure the packed length, width, and height, convert to cubic feet, then divide shipment weight by cubic feet. Example: 150 lb microwave in 6 cu ft = 25 PCF.
  2. Use compatible packaging types: boxes or crates or packages qualifying under 112, 131, 972, 1019, 1082, 1462, or 2260. Light units fit double‑wall cartons; heavier ranges or pizza ovens merit wood or plywood crates.
  3. Protect fragile parts unique to cooking equipment: pad glass doors and ceramic cooktops, immobilize racks and pizza stones, cover edges with corner guards, and secure cords, knobs, and grease trays.
  4. Prepare for LTL pickup: palletize with 4‑way entry, keep handles within the pallet footprint, strap and wrap to prevent tip‑over, mark orientation, and cap any gas connections before shipping.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density inputs minimize reclass and reweigh fees, stabilizing LTL quotes for ovens, ranges, microwaves, and cooktops.
  • Right packaging lowers damage rates on glass, hinges, and control boards, cutting claim costs and replacement delays.
  • Optimized cube and stackability (e.g., toaster ovens in reinforced cartons) improve rate efficiency and trailer utilization.
  • Clear NMFC 26720 mapping speeds carrier approvals and booking, shortening order‑to‑delivery cycles for household cooking gear.
