How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density to set the class: measure each carton (L×W×H in inches), convert to cubic feet (÷ 1728), then divide weight by cubic feet. Example: 24×20×18 in at 36 lb = 5.0 ft³ and 7.2 pcf. Higher pcf lowers the class within the 50–400 scale.
  2. Package to Item 170 standards: use strong corrugated boxes (32 ECT/200# burst), add cell dividers or molded pulp for tumblers, and sleeve vacuum bodies to prevent denting. Avoid loose fill alone; secure lids and stoppers in polybags inside the box.
  3. Palletize only boxed units: align cases with no overhang, use corner boards and stretch wrap, and top-load light to avoid rim crush. Add a slip sheet on top and mark orientation if fragile finishes could scuff.
  4. Document clearly on the BOL: list “Insulated bottles/cups, NMFC 28670,” the carton count, dimensions, total weight, calculated density, and chosen class. Nest cups or optimize master pack sizes to raise pcf and reduce your class.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower freight spend by optimizing density—nesting tumblers and right-sizing cartons can move shipments to a lower class within 50–400.
  • Fewer damages and returns: Item 170-compliant packaging and internal dividers protect vacuum shells and rims, cutting claim costs.
  • Avoid reclass and surprise fees by publishing NMFC 28670 and density on quotes and BOLs, improving rating accuracy and carrier acceptance.
  • Simplified operations: non-hazardous, boxed drinkware streamlines LTL tendering, shortens quote cycles, and supports predictable freight rates.
