How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship bottles empty: remove any CO2 chargers, release pressure, and protect the siphon head with caps or sleeves to prevent valve damage.
- Pack in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or molded inserts; isolate each metal bottle to avoid abrasion and add fill for zero movement.
- Label cartons clearly: “Empty Metal Siphon Bottles—Boxed” and “This Side Up.” Put NMFC 28703, Class 100 on the BOL to prevent reclass.
- Palletize tight with edge boards and stretch wrap; keep heavy ends inward and avoid pallet overhang. Photograph the pack-out for claim support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 provides predictable LTL rates and reduces reclassification disputes.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat paperwork and fees, accelerating tender and pickup.
- Boxed presentation lowers handling risk, cutting damage claims and returns on refurb or resale inventory.
- Repeatable pack standards boost dock efficiency and throughput for beverage and hospitality suppliers.
