How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this code when shipping steel boxes knocked down flat and bundled in packages; note “NMFC 29640, Boxes, steel, NOI, KD flat, in packages, Class 70” on the BOL.
- Unitize KD bundles on sturdy 4‑way pallets and protect sharp edges with angle boards; band at least twice crosswise and twice lengthwise to prevent slip.
- Keep bundles uniform in size and weight to allow safe stacking; mark “Do Not Top Load” if panels may buckle or deform under pressure.
- Photograph the packaged bundles before pickup and record piece count and total weight to avoid accessorials and reclass disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating minimizes reclass risk and billing surprises for steel box shipments.
- KD-flat packaging lowers cube and improves stack efficiency, helping reduce handling costs and damage claims.
- Non-hazardous material broadens carrier options and speeds tendering for LTL moves.
- Simple, non-density classification streamlines quoting and aligns easily with FAK programs using a Class 70 baseline.
