How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density per NMFC Item 170. Measure each handling unit’s length, width, and height in inches, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cubic feet (e.g., 48x40x36 in at 300 lb ≈ 7.5 PCF).
  2. Describe construction and condition on the BOL: note wood, metal, or fiberboard; whether items are empty; and if parts are nested or flat-packed (e.g., aluminum lunch boxes nested, sheet fiberboard can bodies bundled flat).
  3. Package to prevent edge crush and puncture. For non-corrugated fiberboard sheets or mailing tubes, use corner guards, banding, and a moisture barrier; for steel wire bottle crates, palletize, shrink-wrap, and band tightly.
  4. Separate fragile or specialty pieces. Cushion glass boxes, overbox small sheet-steel cash/document boxes, and block and brace wooden crates or shelf boxes to avoid movement and reinspection.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize cost with density-driven packing. Flat-pack fiberboard can bodies or nest totes to raise PCF and unlock lower LTL classes.
  • Consolidate many SKUs under one NMFC. From ballot boxes to mailing tubes, one item streamlines documentation and reduces reclass risk.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat surcharges, enabling faster tendering and predictable transit.
  • Clear materials detail on the BOL (wood/metal/fiberboard) minimizes inspections and accessorials, protecting margins on multi-stop rollouts.
